Beltane

As the wheel of the seasons turn, we come together to celebrate. Beltane is the solstice ritual ( celebrated in the Southern Hemisphere on the 31st of October) to embrace the coming of summer. This is known as a time to rejoice and encourage new beginnings. One of the most well known traditions associated with Beltane is the ritual bonfires. Originally , there were two fires set ( preferable on a hilltop or highest point in the area) and the livestock where herded between the two to grace them with protection and health for the coming season. This is also the time that couples would jump over the flames hand in hand, to commit to one another for the approaching year.

Oatmeal cakes were traditionally made and shared in offerings and the livestock were decorated with flowers that bloomed at this time in the local areas. Although several of the traditions differ from country to country, the basics remain the same.

The colors connected to Beltane are red, yellow and orange.

Bonfires or the lighting of candles are always included in the rituals.

Household fires were put out and relite with the Betaine flames to encourage protection and success for the community and the household.
